Barrow-in-Furness is located on the southern tip of the Furness Peninsula, bordering the Lake District National Park, Morecambe Bay and the Irish Sea. Often overlooked by tourists visiting the nearby lakes and fells, Barrow-in-Furness has a lot to offer to visitors of all ages.

Lovers of nature can visit Walney Island or Piel Island and find natural habitats for many animals and bird species, the ruins of Furness Abbey, Piel Island and Dalton Castle offer excellent venues for historians and families can enjoy a great visit to South Lakes Wild Animal Park, The Dock Museum, Apollo Cinema, Lazer Zone at Custom House or Barrow Superbowl. Barrow-in-Furness also offers a wide range of shopping opportunities in the town centre and out of town including, National chains such as, Next, Debenhams, River Island, WH Smith and M&S as well as many small specialist shops. Throughout the year Barrow-in-Furness hosts several events, including; The Walney Air Show, Barrow, Dalton and Walney carnivals and a Festival of the Sea.

As well as being a great place to come and visit, Barrow-in-Furness also is a place of opportunity for contract employment at the shipyard, gas terminal or offshore platforms.

Tourist Attractions

Barrow-in-Furness has a wide choice of tourist attractions to keep all ages occupied whatever the weather. The Dock Museum (left) and South Lakes Wild Animal Park are a great family day out and the area has a wide choice of historical and natural attractions.

Shopping

The town centre of Barrow-in-Furness has undergone a transformation over the past 10 years and is now home to National stores as well as local specialist shops. Barrow-in-Furness also offers excellent out of town shopping including Hollywood Park, which hosts a six screen cinema, bowling alley and gymnasium.

Events

Barrow-in-Furness hosts a number of events throughout the year, but look out for the main events, which include: Walney Air Show, The Festival of the Sea and Barrow Carnival. On an evening visitors have the option to visit the theatre at Forum 28, Live Bands and Comedy at The Canteen Media and Arts Centre or dance the night away on the Princess Selandia moored in the dock.
